WHY?

The complex challenges we’re facing as a society call for us to be innovative and creative.

We’re used to thinking of the world as linear and predictable, but often our plans do not follow a straight line - there are ups and downs, unexpected turns, tipping points and surprises.

Developmental Evaluation can help us make sense in unpredictable and complex situations. It combines evaluative judgements about what’s happening and what’s working with a generative process of figuring out what to try next, combining creativity and rigor, learning and results.

DE helps us learn and evaluate our progress as we go, informing our next steps.

WHO?

CONTENT OF THE COURSE
The material from this course is based on a real time course designed and hosted by Beehive Productions in collaboration with Rita Fierro and Ciaran Camman. In this course you will also find a unique contribution from the originator of DE, Michael Quinn Patton.

Rita Fierro

Rita is an intellectual artist who skillfully combines creative, innovative, and analytical thinking by bridging groups, networks, and arenas that may seem far apart: art and facilitation, evaluation, healing and research.

Fierro Consulting

Ciaran Camman

Ciaran is an independent evaluation consultant and adventurer on an evaluation journey. My passion is designing flexible, creative (even fun!) approaches that make evaluation accessible for everyone.

Camman Evaluation

Michael Quinn Patton

Michael is the Founder and CEO of Utilization-Focused Evaluation, an independent organizational development and program evaluation organization.

He is a pioneer of several evaluation methods and have authored many books on this topic.

Course Structure

This course helps us deepen our understanding of the practical aspects of working with Developmental Evaluation. The course will look at DE through 4 lenses or metaphors: Developmental Evaluation as: "A SAFE HAVEN", as a "THE CHRYSALIS", "THE PATIENT GARDENER" and "SIFTING"

  • Intro to DE
  • Introducing the instructors and the compendium

Developmental Evaluation can be a safe haven and be a greenhouse for your client, where you help them create a space to pause, where it is safe to learn, to experiment, to explore, and to discover. The greenhouse helps them accept what they know and what they either don’t know yet or know but haven’t been able to articulate yet. Here we explore:

  • Inquiry Frameworks
  • Asses the complexity of our work
  • The Adaptive Action Cycle
  • Buckets for making sense of the unknown

Sometimes transformation is puzzling. We may think we don’t have what we need, because we experience ourselves “breaking down” from the old. But we do. Once we’re on the other side, once we’ve become butterflies, it all MAKE SENSE! In the meantime though, it can be awfully uncomfortable, unpredictable, and frustrating.

DE can help us prepare for change, establishing some bearings in the midst of uncertainty. We explore:

  • The Chaordic Space
  • Why we talk about change and DE
  • Principles for navigating change
  • Preparing ourselves and preparing others for change

You don’t start with the fully abundant garden. You start from seeds and nurture them in their growth. Is there soil - a place where seeds can grow? What kind of preparation might it need to grow the specific seeds I am trying to grow? What’s the light like? What’s the season, and the weather? What kinds of animals or pests might my seeds encounter?

One of the core aspects of allowing developmental evaluation to guide learning is to pay attention to context not only once, but over-time. In other words, as the project changes and engages change, the context may change with it. We explore:

  • Principles and practices for nurturing learning
  • How to become present to the context
  • Building responsive learning infrastructure
  • Emergent learning frameworks
  • Guiding principles for DE

When we find ourselves in contexts in which we don’t know what comes next and clarity is nowhere in sight, surrendering to the process can be not only the best way, but the only way. In that case, simply sifting the information that is relevant for the group or the context can be extremely helpful. Navigating and being in Emergence invites us to be awake and sense what is happening in a very physical way. Here we explore:

  • Sensing and probing
  • Tracking learning curves
  • Reporting
  • Conversation with Michael Quinn Patton
  • Sample of The Art of Questions and Invitations
  • Principles for Harvesting Learning - PLUME

"This discussion was really timely - for my work in community.  Learning how to create the container - with minimal structure - to harvest something meaningful - to guide our next steps.  How to ‘notice’ what is emerging and make sense collectively of what is possible and where we might begin. Thank you!"
